The most beautiful places in Reutlingen on the Swabian Alb
Reutlingen on the Swabian Alb belongs to the metropolitan region of Stuttgart and has about 114,000 inhabitants. This makes Reutlingen in the far northwest of Baden-Württemberg the ninth-largest city in the state. The beautiful half-timbered houses in the old town still bear witness to its former wealth as an imperial city.
If you want to take a walk through the center of Reutlingen, you can’t get past the old city wall. It is a real highlight with its city wall houses integrated into the Zwinger. In the center of the old town is the Spitalhof with the Nikolaikirche. The neo-Gothic building was consecrated in 1358 and features the figure of the church’s patron saint on the outer wall of the choir. The historic Spitalhof also dates from the late 12th century. It was once a hospital and later a retirement home for the city’s well-heeled upper class. The market fountain on the market square, built-in 1570, is adorned with a sculpture of Emperor Maximilian II, who restored the democratic constitution under the guild order in 1576.
Enjoy a walk through the old town of Reutlingen.

People’s Park with Pomologie: where botany and history meet.
A visit to the historic Pomologie in the middle of the city, the educational institute for horticulture and fruit culture, is also worthwhile. It borders directly on the central Volkspark and, together with it, is Reutlingen’s most popular recreational area. Idyllic walking paths lead through lush orchards. Past rose gardens and water features. From here, you have a wonderful view of the local mountain, the Achalm, and the Marienkirche. There are plenty of playgrounds for children.
“Die Tonne”: an inclusive theater of a special kind.
You can experience pizzazz and a lot of humor at the theater “Die Tonne.” This cultural institution has existed since the 1950s and shows what is possible beyond classic theater work because, since 2005, real inclusion has been lived at this theater. A group of people with disabilities are regularly involved in various productions and win the hearts of the audience in no time. They are also frequently invited to festivals
Every year, about 260 performances take place at the theater “Die Tonne.” Whether it’s a chamber play, children’s theater, or a musical revue, there’s something here for every taste.
Stuttgart is always worth a visit.
Not far from Reutlingen, the state capital Stuttgart attracts visitors with numerous cultural and leisure facilities – many of them world-famous. Those interested in architecture should not miss the famous Weißenhofsiedlung on the Killesberg, where numerous buildings in the Bauhaus style have been preserved true to the original. No less exciting is the Wilhelma, Stuttgart’s famous botanical-zoological garden. With 1 million visitors a year, Wilhelma is the most visited zoo in Germany. Here you can marvel at 11,000 animals and about 1200 species, making Wilhelma one of the most species-rich zoos in the world. The facility was created in 1842 by King Wilhelm I of Württemberg as a botanical garden and enchanted with fairy-tale flair, of which much can still be felt today. A special highlight is the magnolia blossom in March.
The Urach waterfall is truly spectacular.
Heading south, there is another sight to discover: the Urach Waterfall, located two kilometers southwest of Bad Urach. It is rightly considered one of the fascinating natural spectacles of the Swabian Alb because it always offers new perspectives. The water plunges 37 meters into the depths over a ridge of tufa, which is already noticeable from a distance by its unmistakable roar. The surrounding nature is also worth seeing, and the Gütersteiner waterfall is another nearby attraction.
